Don't trust Sandra Pupatello's numbers

National Post

Published: Monday, June 04, 2007

Here is a reality check about domestic violence. The following is a case of which I have knowledge: A man called the police while being physically assaulted by his wife. The police came and noticed scratches on the man but did not arrest the woman. They did require that she leave the home, however. The Children's Aid Society then took the child from the father because the child had been "exposed to violence" -- even though the violence perpetrator was no longer in the home.

This is one of the reasons why we cannot trust the arrest statistics cited by Ms. Pupatello, which show that those arrested for domestic assault are predominantly male. Men risk a great deal when they call the police -- even when they are the ones who are being victimized by domestic violence.
